ITEM 4:  SinQA Meet Up

Ref:   http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/event.php?eid=80038093572&ref=ts
Host: Singapore Queer-Straight Alliance (SinQSA)
Date: Saturday, April 25, 2009
Time: 3:00pm – 6:00pm
Location: Food #03, Post-Museum, 107+109 Rowell Rd
City/Town: Singapore, Singapore
Phone: 63963598
Email: admin@sinqsa.org

it must be clear that it is not an event, but a regular SinQSA meet-up,
and that we will address the implications of the Aware episode on “gender equality” and queer-identified and straight women.
it is not a meeting to generate hate or speculation, if you know what i mean.
the main purpose of the meet-up is to make people sensitive/aware of gender issues and related events in singapore.
ALL are welcomed;   it’s all about pluralism and hearing other people’s stories, if you feel it’s great to share and listen

ITEM 5: DBS PROTEST

Ref:   D.T. said, on April 20, 2009 at 10:19 pm (Edit)

” What I did however, was to cancel all my DBS credit cards.

As a consumer, I have the rights to decide,
with which company I want to spend my money with.

After I terminated the cards, their service recovery staff called back the next day and tried to convince me otherwise. They already prep as to what to say when
I mentioned my reason of termination.

Their stand was:  that the matter is still being handled internally and an appropriate response will be made known to the public when their investigations are complete.

The bank (DBS) is actively monitoring the fall-out from this PR crisis. If enough customers were to act & terminate their cards, the bank will definitely ask Lau to quit her post at Aware. “

====================================================================================

ITEM 6:  Facebook group  :
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=25846462465#/group.php?gid=72296674515&ref=mf

“If you are female, or care about the people around you who are female, i.e: your mothers, wives, sisters or daughters, please join us and help spread the word.

Currently, a group of unknowns have taken over AWARE, the leading advocacy group for gender equality in Singapore. We have reason to believe that they do not act in the best interest of all women. They definitely have an agenda, or they would not have executed such a despicable and underhanded act of staging a coup.

If they want to push their agenda, let them form their own organisation.

If they truly care so much about women’s rights, they should work WITH AWARE, not against them.

If there is nothing sinister about their actions, they should stop their silence and explain to us why they did what they did and what are their plans for the future.

If they do not have anything to hide, they could have simply said “We will continue to do the good work that AWARE has been doing and improve on it.”

Instead, they have simply said “No comment”

As long as they continue to keep silent, we will continue to believe that their agenda differs from the current AWARE mission and we need to work together to get these group of people out of AWARE’s ex-co.

In order to help ensure that AWARE maintains in safe hands, a group of people are gathering women to sign up as members of AWARE. If you are a woman in Singapore and are keen to help maintain the mission statement of AWARE, please turn up during the coming EOGM to cast your vote.

Membership is at $40 per year and if you are a student below 25, you can purchase it at just $5.

Sign up at www.aware.org.sg

————————————————————————————————

If you want to help us, please come down, and join as a member. This is truly a matter of numbers already. We need you, every single one of you. Your vote MATTERS.

Remember,
You don’t have to be an animal to support animal rights

You don’t have to be a child to support childrens’ rights

You don’t have to be gay to support gay rights

You don’t have to be a woman to support gender equality.

======================================================================================

Qouting from another AWARE member , whose views I echo:

” If you’ve read the Straits Times, TODAY, or have been in contact with an AWARE member recently, you’ll be aware of what has happened to our organisation.
150 members have recently submitted a petition to the new ExCo for an Extraordinary General Meeting to ask the new team about their motives and plans for the organisation. So far they have already removed chairpeople from key AWARE committees. We are concerned what they’ll do about key aware programmes that don’t align with their undisclosed agenda.

From January – March of this year, AWARE’s membership increased by over 100 members. Many of the new members submitted applications on photocopied forms, suggesting they had been given out at a large meeting. These new members showed up en mass at AWARE’s Annual General Meeting on March 28 and voted themselves in nine of twelve Executive Committee positons. They now hold the majority and decision-making power.

None of these women had volunteered with AWARE before. When asked of their opinions on feminism their responses were noncommital. When asked about their plans for the future of AWARE, they also had little to say.
Several are members of a very anti-gay church and have been public about their hostility towards gays. Rumor has it that this takeover was stragetically planned because AWARE is an open and welcoming place for women, regardless of class, race, or sexuality.
In the little time these women have been in charge of AWARE, they have fired the highly respected chairs of several important subcommittees. These subcomms were conducting research for the United Nations and for Singapore, and now that research is in danger.

The EGM has been scheduled by the new ExCo for Saturday, May 2.(Happens to be on a holiday weekend, so we’re worried people won’t be able to attend…) Please attend and support the old guard of AWARE. We may have a vote of no confidence so we need you there. Rally as many of your friends to join AWARE and come to the meeting. This is extremely important if you care about the future of women’s issues in this country.

We have experienced a hostile takeover and need to get the organisation back in safe hands that actually care about the org’s vision and mission.

So according to the Today news report Claire Nazar decided she needed some outside muscle to settle an internal dispute but was surprised when the help overdid things by ousting more then what she expected? So was her surprise at the large turnout that day an act, or did her friends decide that they know what’s best?

From what written here, seems like Claire got cold feet…

  2. mathialee said, on April 18, 2009 at 6:04 pm

I think that people from the outside (me included) can only speculate, and that is not going to help, moving forward.

I think it is for the people directly involved to handle the internal politics

What our role is , is to continue to support the ideology of not being unjust and discriminatory. And one way we can do that is to make sure the most influential NGO in singapore that has been campaigning for this ideology for decades, does not die out, simply because there wasn’t enough numbers at the EOGM.

    Hi,

    Just some food for thought.
    http://wherebearsroamfree.blogspot.com/2009/04/public-call-to-join-aware-may-backfire.html

Are you not helping your opponent to do you in?

  4. mathialee said, on April 19, 2009 at 4:16 pm

Hehehe……..you know what? I think that’s very brilliant thinking.
trust me when i say, that thought has plagued me too.

again, my disclaimer: I’m spouting my own thoughts here, not representing anyone other than me :

The fair, ideal situation would be to take a vote amongst all who are members at the time of the 28th March AGM, whether or not they were present at the AGM. However, the New Exco, who are in charge of the EGM, would obviously not go with that.

Unfortunately it has boiled down to a numbers game. Very much like the American idols and stuff like that.
And both sides are flying blind. We don’t know how many person affiliates they are recruiting, we don’t know how many personal affliliates we’re recuiting. Can’t risk losing the vote, simply because one side has more friends than the other right? I mean, at least 6 of the Exco members come from a certain church reported yesterday in the ST, and the church reportedl has 4000 members. We had 500 AWARE members. You work out the numbers.
But I don’t think that’s really the main reason why we call on the public.

We all admit, that the numbers the AGM saw was attributed primarily to complacency — or maybe just a simple faith that Singaporeans are good people who won’t resort to such underhand methods. Frankly, when the first report broke, my first instinct, and hence first blog post, was to reject the idea that such a conspiracy could even have taken place!! Singapore??? Unthinkable!!! I put it down to bad journalism, which is something I’ve witnessed before.

But now that everyone who cares (in both camps) are aware that every single person’s vote MATTERS. And when that happens, I think people will get out to vote. Look what happened with the Obama elections. When people realise what’s at stake, and that EVERY VOTE counts, people do get round to doing something.

So by poviding all the information we can to enable everyone out in the public to vote, no matter which side you are from, what this election will become is a test of support level —- how many people care enough to stand up and say ” We want justice and equality for all, and we do not support underhand means of winning an election” versus how many people care enough to stand up and say ” We want to achieve our ‘pro-family’ values, and we will achieve it by underhands means, if that’s what it takes”.

Unfortunately, it will still be a numbers game — which side has more people who care enough to pay that $40 membership fee and do something about the situation.

Another reason why we (or at least, I ) want to give people as detailed publically info as possible is this:
I fundamentally believe in the right to full objective information, so that we can be empowered to make informed choices based on our own personal values. Just because the New Exco does not believe in this, and chooses to withhold info, and especially because the AWARE website is now down, does not mean that I have to play the same game, and start withholding information, and start making sure only certain voters I like have the opportunity to vote.

I put the information out there, because I want to empower you (the public) to vote, but ultimately the choice is yours, you got to make it based on your values.

    Hi Mathia,

What is your stance on this issue?

Are you on the side of the old guard or the new exco?

  7. mathialee said, on April 20, 2009 at 10:05 am

I do not believe in taking sides for parties.

I am on the side of the values of justice and equality, regardless of race, language, religion, gender, sexual orientation, job occupation, educational level, poverty level, nationality etc.

I am on the side of fair play and honest intentions

I am on the side of the people in society who’s rights and dignity we want to make sure are respected.

I will stand with whoever holds these values.

This is not a soccer game, where both sides are playing the same game.

This is not a cat fight or power play where both sides mean the same thing, but are struggling for control or power.

This is a situation, where ONLY one side is fighting to make sure Singapore has a voice in civil society for gender equality, non-discrimination, empowerment through full information

And the other side is fighting to make sure that this voice is killed, but taking control of the organisation and systematically removing all the people who make up that voice.

If they merely wanted to make their own stand heard, if they did not want to kill this voice, and eliminate this diversity in society, they would have either set up another organisation, or else they would speak through their church.

Their actions show a destructive intent. I couldn’t bring myself to believe it at first, based on initial speculations, hence my original post last Saturday 11 Apr. Ever since, their actions have given me enough evidence to believe their destructive intent.

I applaud alternative voices. But I cannot condone a group who makes their voice heard at the expense and destruction of another voice, in such an underhand method.

Like the wonton mee that is not up to standard, I would like to return Josie to the shop that she came from.

Are you keeping a tally of people who have signed up as members of AWARE and *willing* to vote these people out in the EOGM? We have to be sure that we have the numbers to outgun them!! This is a battle we cannot lose.

I agree with “wherebearsroamfree”, we cannot again introduce trojan(s) into AWARE. Josie and her gang won this time because they were organised, loyal and used the element of surprise. We have to be better organised than them from now on to regain AWARE. And yes, “stealth is key”, never reveal your game plan…

  11. mathialee said, on April 20, 2009 at 2:18 pm

It is quite impossible to know how many they have on the other side, so we can only try our best.

The precautions we can take are to make sure that we, the legitimate voters, will not be barred from entry based on technicalities. Hence I recommend we take the following steps :

    Bring along

    1. Proof of membership:
AWARE membership card OR e-receipts from the AWARE website ( http://www.aware.org.sg/?page%20id=1078 )
Online registration by credit card, PayPal accepted.

    2. Proof of registration for EGM:
You HAVE to register with manager@aware.org.sg or call 67797137 before 22nd Apr
I suggest EMAIL. Request for a DELIVERY receipt, and PRINT the delivery receipt as proof

(Also fwd email to olivia.tan@gmail.com . She’ll be keeping an independant list that can be counter-checked against the AWARE new Exco’s list)

    Hi Mathia,

Have posted this on Ovidia’s site and reposting here for more support.
Also, I’m not on Facebook – so pls feel free to forward to any other sites:

I’m male and since only females 18 above can vote at the EOGM, I think its pointless for the boys to join.

What I did however, was to cancel all my DBS credit cards.

As a consumer, I have the rights to decide,

    Thank you so much D-T

    I think that’s a brilliant idea.

We need more people like you who are willing to DO SOMETHING.

Perhaps you’ll consider writing to the press too? And also some of the very well read forums in Singapore = )

    Thank!

  14. Amanda said, on April 21, 2009 at 3:17 am

Instead of cancelling cards, there is still time to lodge a silent protest by getting a permit to assemble outside DBS to demand for action against Josie or for a rally to write in to DBS to prevent Josie from acting as AWARE’s President.

  15. Steve said, on April 21, 2009 at 6:08 am

When Josie Lau was asked if her exco would help a WOMAN who was discriminated because of her “sexuality” (ie, lesbianism ), Josei Lau could not give a direct answer.

If she said “no”, her agenda against homosexuality (lesbianism in this case) would be exposed.

If she said “yes”, she would have contradicted her religious beliefs , agreed to the Old Guards’ position AND may have a difficult time trying to say “no” later.

Does this mean that she excludes certain discriminated women ?

Her indirect answer to the direct question speaks volumes.

How can I access the consitution? Any link? Also, as some bloggers put it, those who want to put the old exco back are not sufficiently organized, like do you know how many people are registering as new members, and who are the members who are supporting this view, otherwise this will probably be a futile bid, as it can already been seen that the new exco members are meticulously organised.

I may not have the real picture of the situation at Aware, only the current members probably do, since it is difficult to really get the full picture from the media, epecially from people not really involved in it. What do the other exisiting members besides of the old exco have to say about this? A statement from as many of team would be useful.

If the old exc members are really working on for the good of AWARE and not doing this as a power struggle, an option would be to get supporters/sponsors for females who like to join but cannot afford the S$40 annual fee. How many members do the old exco anticipate that the new exco can get? 100, 200, 400, et.c.. to support them? In reponse to this, the old exco should have a similar approach to get much more people to support them if they like to oust the new exco.

The old exco could possibly sponser such potential new members who cannot afford this fee, each taking in perhaps 10 members each….

If you really think the old exco is really working towards the good for all women out there, I could even think of sponsoring 10 – 20 people for that matter. I believe that there are also others out there who may e willing to do the same to preserve the neutrality of AWARE.

Yes, the link to the constitution is at the top of the article :

    AWARE CONSTITUTION http://www.geocities.com/mathia_lee_yu_chun/AWAREConstitutionJune2006.pdf

My personal take is that the supporters of the New Exco seem to come from a/ a few particular organisations — there’s already an organised structure in place!

While we are appealing to EVERYONE in the entire country who holds our values dear and wants to see the continuation of an NGO who is standing up for these values.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’ve been very open about the fact that I’m part of the Comprehensive Sexuality Ed programme run by AWARE, since the start of this blog in Oct 2008. I am not ExCo. My views here are all my own.

Given the fact that most of the old Exco are limited in terms of resources as individuals, and given the amount of time we have, there are great challenges for them to be that well organised.

I completely agree with your suggestions, but I think that rather than looking to someone else to do the job, we should do what ever we can. That’s what I’m trying to do, and that’s what a lot of bloggers and FB etc people are trying to do.. Then we can only hope we win the numbers game.

I greatly admire your generosity in wanting to sponsor people who cannot afford it.

If we can work out a good way of administering this, and more importantly, of being accountable to you because we don’t want you to be taken advantaged of, I’ll be happy to help out, in the administration and in the advertising.

We might even get more kind sponsors = )

Let me know what you think, and for others reading, do let me know your thoughts on sponsorship too.

I am aware that $40 may be steep for some who wish do do nothing more than cast a vote.

    Send me a private email mathialee@yahoo.com ?

    Dear Mathia,

You sure sound like you are on a roll! I can only wish you all the best in your endeavor. I really hope things turn out well; this could very well set the tone for the future of civil society in Singapore. But perhaps I am over-stating things somewhat.

Still, not to throw a spanner or anything, after reading through the Constitution of AWARE (a fairly simple document really), I now have a slightly different view of things. If AWARE is supposed to advance the cause of women in Singapore in general, then perhaps it needs to take into account the views and concerns of people like Josie and her friends. They are successful women in their own right, and I am quite sure that they can also contribute in their own ways to the advancement of women in Singapore.

After all, democracy should not be the tyranny of the majority. The new AWARE and people who share their views are Singaporean women and have a stake in our society too. The old AWARE may wish to think about how to bring on board their views and concerns. (Are both sides really so far apart?) Some may think that this will dilute the values of AWARE. But these values are not cast in stone. Consensus is difficult and often the lowest common denominator. But overall, its much better to engage and be inclusive than to exclude and do your own thing.

Just my US$0.02… which I know will not go down well with the feminist crowd… :-)

    Warm regards

Thank you for the info and link.

Singaporeans in general are apathetic so you will need a more concerted effort if the old exco really want to oust the new exco based on its differing view from that of AWARE and using this NGO as their platform for their “hidden” agenda? I believe that there are more capable women than the VP of DBS Bank. However, will these women stand out and support this and potentially get emroiled this perhaps thankless job, espeically if they have no ulterior motives like what is being perceived with the new comers. Writing in the blogs is one thing, to really get involved is another. Keep up your good work and involvement in this NGO, and steer it in the path that it has started with.

Also registration for the EGM before 22 April 2009 is to short to a time to recruit all the members I can potentially think about. Today is already the 21st. Well if this EGM doesn’t work, the old guard can still plan for another one (can they?), this time make sure that it will be properly organized, fully executed, with sufficient member support, and the heads will then roll.

Also I don’t understand how this is possible -
“(****Arrive early: You might be stopped from entry if they claim place is too full****)”.

If one is registered, then how can they be stopped from entry? What if those who registered but cannot turn up on that day? Also, why is there a need to register to attend the EGM? Aren’t all members privy to attend the EGM? If there is no space, then let it spill out of the premises.

I don’t suppose it will help to join now, if one cannot attend in person at the EGM? Can the votes be by proxy? Most organisations allow that in the constitution (I will need to reveiw the like you provided)

This website has been set up.

Please refer to http://we-are-aware.sg for future updates.

This is the closest to an official Old AWARE members website that is available. I can vouch for the website authors — they are the most reliable direct sources of information currently.

saw this IMPORTANT info reported on other websites:

“Now, here’s something the public does not yet know: The television station’s original plan was for a member each of the old guard and the new guard to be in the interview. JOSIE LAU OBJECTED VEHEMENTLY AND INSISTED THEY WOULD NOT SHARE THE INTERVIEW ROOM AND PROGRAM WITH ANYONE FROM THE OLD GUARD [emphasis mine]. So much for reconciliation.

There’s also the extremely curt email (so much for reconciliation, again) they sent to Braema Mathi telling her she’s been relieved of her position as chair of the subcommittee preparing AWARE’s report to be submitted to the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). Without even a customary word of thanks, the email said:

Kindly note that your term of office as chairman of the CEDAW Committee has ceased at the date of the AGM on the 28 March 2009.

Kindly submit all the work in progess by Friday 17 April 2009 without fail.

    Regards
    Sally Ang”

Is vote buying allowed under the Constitution?

  27. Stephen said, on April 23, 2009 at 12:02 pm

Maybe Josie Lau and her exco should be asked publicly in a formal setting a very direct question, requiring a “yes” or “no” asnwer regarding women who are discriminated because fo their sexual orientation (ie, lesbianism or bisexuality), and their answer recorded for posterity.

    An example :

Will you, Josie Lau, President of AWARE, and your new exco of AWARE, always respect the sexual orientation of any woman, including lesbianism and bisexuality, and will always assist them in whatever way possible, if such women are disciminated because their sexual orientation of any kind whatsoever ? “yes” or “no” ?

  28. MonoGrizzly said, on April 23, 2009 at 5:22 pm

I think that’s a great idea. Perhaps they should open the questioning to the Excos and Presidents, past and present as well.

    Example:

Do you always respect the sexual orientation of any woman, including lesbianism, bisexuality, and that of Melissa Huckaby, and will always assist them in whatever way possible, if such women are disciminated because their sexual orientation of any kind whatsoever ? “yes” or “no” ?

Whether ultra-conservative or alternative lifestyle, both are fringe. That’s reality. Be contented.

Don’t hide behind big neutral words, or female rights. If there’s pride, why don’t just open your own shop rather than hide behind a smokescreen?

Some (fringe) hate it, some (fringe) love it, most (=mainstream) just go about their normal lives. It’s only when the fringe court the love of the mainstream that we are bothered and disturbed. Stop disturb the mainstream, both.
