Mathia Lee ~ Plans and Preoccupations

Good without god?

Posted in Life Update, religion by mathialee on April 15, 2010

you know how i constantly think about questions like
“what if god didn’t exist?” ? (if you didn’t, yes i’m one of those strange people…. )

.

i usually wonder if god didn’t exist, then is there anything worthy or meaningful to do, because how can it be meaningful to live for the good of protein molecules right? The belief that humans are more than just protein molecules is, to me, a religious belief in the divine

.

i just got back from a talk on Human trafficking and public health

the girl presenting it didn’t really talk about the health bit tho’ , just lots on human trafficking

but it struck me as i was listening to her:

.

if god (general god, not necessarily a particular religion) really didn’t exist , then WE are all that these people (eg the trafficked people) have. There’s no god, no one else to help them already.

.

which makes the need and situation all the more desperate

.

and in the same vein, my friends are all i have. there’s no one else. which makes them all the more precious.

.

there’s this song i really like, and i think it’s a genuine theological question that should be discussed and address in college or in some sermon

What if god was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
Just trying to make his way home
Like a holy rolling stone
Back up to heaven all alone
Just trying to make his way home
Nobody calling on the phone
Except for the pope maybe in rome

.

.

(am not advocating a belief in any of the above. These are just rambling products of the pensive mood i’ve been in since submiting that thesis. It almost feels like a break up. I think i’m going to buy the book Good Without God this evening)

of course, god exist. It is within everyone of us. the bodies which we have are vehicle to contain the essence of god, our soul.

god is the total consciousness which all living things are make up of. that is the reason why there is mention of cosomo consciousness etc.

Hey, I like that song too! Just the tune and the feel of it; I have not examined the lyrics in detail.

You made a good point. If there were no God, then we are all we have. And in my book, there is no God. We are all we have.

Every moment becomes more precious too, when you realise that there is no eternity.

    Mathia,

You’re such an interesting person. As a non-believer that was what I had to struggle with – is there still meaning in life if there’s no god? Earth is just the 3rd rock from the sun all or us just collection of molecules. What about morality? If there is no God, is there a need for morality? Humans are just tiny specks of dust moving aroind on a rock that constitute less than 0.0000000000001% of the known universe so does it even matter if you live your life as a good person, bad person, nice person, nasty person….1 million years from now mankind probably won’t exist and nobody is around to even remember your good or bad deeds.

As a non-believe I do get some hope and solace from John Lennon’s Imagine:

    Imagine there’s no Heaven
    It’s easy if you try
    No hell below us
    Above us only sky
    Imagine all the people
    Living for today

    Imagine there’s no countries
    It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
    And no religion too
    Imagine all the people
    Living life in peace

You may say that I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

    Imagine no possessions
    I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
    A brotherhood of man
    Imagine all the people
    Sharing all the world

You may say that I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

    ———————————-

We are all transients here to share a world, a peaceful brotherhood of man, nothing to kill or die for and no religion too.

I couldn’t agree more with JoeLee. You are a very interesting person with wide areas of interest, :) . Like you I constantly questioned myself whether God is real or it is a delusion. I haven’t got the answer yet, but after hearing Richard Dawkins’ video, titled “The root of all evil”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_1Gpt6dKFo

I’m about to believe that religion is a tool. Constantine, the roman emperor, used Christianity to unite the Roman empire.

Religion is not a ‘bad’ tool however. As a matter of fact, I think it is a good tool, because it helps us to overcome despair and disappointment in life.
    http://roanyong.wordpress.com/2008/06/26/selling-hope-how-christianity-can-win-over-atheist/

The problem comes when someone becomes a religious fanatics (the radicals) and determine to coerce people from different belief to adopt their faith. I got ‘scared’ when I watch this award winning documentary film, titled “Jesus Camp”

Let me know whether the book “Good without God” is good. I’m thinking of reading this book, the God Delusion, by Richard Dawkins:
    http://www.amazon.com/God-Delusion-Richard-Dawkins/dp/0618918248/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1273758481&sr=1-1

Looking forward to talk to you on this issue.

Roan: what do you think? :

I reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals

I reject as false the choice between our rationality and our religion

I reject as false the choice between our career and our family

I reject as false the choice between our health and our wealth

I reject as false the choice between exploitation and prosperity

I reject as false the choice between being straight and being gay

I reject as false the choice between being sexy and being smart

I reject as false the choice between war and freedom

I reject as false the choice between being a gaurd and a prisoner

I reject as false the choice between community and individuality

very clever, :) . We should not let others’ judgment affect the way we live our life.
    Enjoy your weekend Mathia, :)

Based on what they’ve read, seen or heard, every person develops a worldview and lives according to that worldview. Thus, everyone has their own religion. Even so-called atheists worship their own gods such as: Richard Dawkins, Chris Hitchens, themselves, money, sports, education, technology, drugs, etc. etc.. Whatever consumes you is your god.

Every single non-living thing has a creator – someone who knew exactly how to put it together – watches, buildings, cars, etc. Why would it be any different for mega-complex living beings?

I agree with the person that mentioned about protein molecules. Why should non-believers be so concerned about wrong behaviors or any type of wrongdoings committed by others? After all, to a true atheist, an act of murder should be nothing more than atoms striking other atoms. Aren’t they the very ones who condemn those who attempt to live a moral life?
